Curiously enough, one of his classmates and research partners at the University of Londinium was Isaak Fernand von Kämpfer. They were involved in some sort of mysterious experiment which backfired very badly and got them both expelled. There is a lot of backstory and relationship detail between the two characters which is never made quite clear anywhere I've looked.
