Episode 26--Spinning Heart (Kokoro Tsumuide)

[In the absence of a subtitled episode, for the last time, this version is 50% from the visuals, 49% from outside reviews and 1% from my smidgen of language lessons (thx JPod 101 =). Best we can do....as before, and for everything, warmest thanks to Divine's Random Curiosity blog and Subculture blog. I couldn't've done this without you.]

(Note: No opening theme sequence this time, just a moment of it under the sponsors' announcements before the first ad break. Also, it seems that the meaning of "spinning" in the title isn't "rotating" but more like "weaving", in the sense of "spider spinning its web" or "spinning wool into yarn"--which makes very sweet and subtle sense in context.)

Miharu calls Yoite's name as he walks down the pew toward him, but Yoite says "stay away from me". Why?--asks Miharu, and Yoite says that everything is his fault, including the deaths of Hattori and Raikou. When Miharu tries to approach, he's held away with a burst of the Kira user's remaining power. Miharu tells Yoite that what he says isn't so, but he can't bear to hear it. Hiding his head in his hands, he says that he no longer asks to be erased, and simply wants to be left to die alone.

Miharu, speaking with great emotion, says that he himself is the one who should be blamed; that Yoite is his friend and is very important to him, and --more than that--Raikou, Gau, and Yukimi all considered Yoite a priceless friend as well. None of them would wish for him to die this way, he tells the assassin. Yoite is surprised and touched by his words, and remembers Raikou, and the wounded Yukimi telling him to live. --He stands and faces his friend. Miharu says that he's ready to help Yoite disappear if that's still his wish--but Yoite's been drawn out of his despair, and says that he's decided to live out his remaining days. Miharu reminds him that he can still alter his past so that he never chose to learn the Kira, but to his surprise--and the astonishment of Kotarou Fuuma, perched eavesdropping on the roof, who's so surprised he falls off it--Yoite says that he chooses to keep that as well, since without that choice he would never have met Yukimi, Raikou or Miharu. He doesn't need the shinrabanshou, he says. Miharu smiles, and says if that's so, then he doesn't need it either; he too will choose to live with his power but without using it. The Fairy is shocked and outraged, and protests fiercely, but her host tells her sternly that she's no longer needed, and banishes her to the depths of his consciousness. Sayonara, Yosei-san, he says as she vanishes. He tells Yoite he will solve his problems with his own heart, and Yoite smiles. --Kotarou, disappointed that Miharu isn't going to use the hijutsu, vanishes himself.

We see Miharu running up the steps to his family's restaurant, calling a lively greeting to his aunt, uncle and grandmother, and tossing his backpack into his room before heading back out the door. Everyone comments on how much he's changed, but his grandmother remarks that he was this way when his parents were still alive, and is surprised to realize that she now remembers them. == Miharu runs back down the steps to join Kouichi and Raimei, who are off to visit Thobari and Hana's house. Gau and Yoite are staying there now [I think this makes it pretty clear that the house is hers and Thobari just lives there--he'd never stand for this =)] and Gau is helping Yoite with his knitting, which he's taken up now that he needs a quiet pastime. He's working on a scarf, and says that he hopes to finish it before it's too late --Miharu says "or before it's too warm to wear it," as it's clear that spring is on the way. Gau says he's getting used to attending school in Banten and has joined the kendo club, as the training makes him feel closer to Raikou.===Raimei notes with a smile that Gau is wearing on his belt the little embroidered charm Raikou used to wear in his hair. She recalls that he tried to give her this, saying regretfully that it was all he found when he searched the ruins for Raikou's remains, but she gave it back to him, saying that he should have it because she already carries Raikou in her heart.

Thobari arrives and goes to help Hana in the kitchen. She says fondly that having so many young people around makes her feel as if they have children, and wonders if this is how motherhood feels, though she's never before considered having kids. Startled at first, Thobari has to admit that he never thought he'd have such a peaceful lifestyle, and that he likes it. Kouichi and Raimei come to the door to ask if they can help with anything and catch them kissing, to the usual fluster and amusement.

As they all eat and chat, Miharu spots Shiratama outside (it's awhile since I've seen her, he says) and tells Kouichi that he learned his secret from Raimei. He asks if Kouichi is all right with what's happened, and he replies that he's decided to live out his current life in Banten with the Aizawa family--though, he adds as he looks out the window, he doesn't know what Shijima plans to do.

We see Shijima (in her human form) and Fuuma Kotarou sitting in a tall pine, talking. She's surprised at how easily he's accepted Miharu's refusal to use the shinrabanshou, but he feels there's still a lot to look forward to, as other hosts have failed to control the hijutsu, but Miharu is the first to willingly suppress it yet keep hold of it. He says he's content to wait and see. She points out that he can't wait indefinitely, not being immortal like her and Kouichi, but he says that she mustn't think the human Fuuma Kotarou is the only one, and that there have been Fuuma Kotarous throughout the entire long history of the shinrabanshou. Seeming amused by this, she leaps from the tree and runs off into the woods, transforming back into Shiratama as she goes.

Miharu leaves the gathering early, saying he needs to stop and pick up some supplies for the restaurant, and Hanabusa suggests Thobari go with him as she needs a few things. (Knowing her, she just wants to give them a chance to talk.)-- As he walks behind Miharu, the boy mentions that until recently he was the only one to remember the events of the past, and asks Thobari if he ever thought about those he had lost. Thobari says he did, but denies, when Miharu asks, that he ever wished to lose those memories, even though they were painful. He's grateful for the present, he says, and to Asahi for making it possible. Miharu hopes that Thobari will always cherish his memories of his mother, and he says he will.

As they wait for the shopkeeper to find an item, a car pulls up outside; it's Kazuho and Yukimi. Kazuho is glad to have spotted them and hands them a bag containing Yoite's current medicines--though she sadly says they can't really do much for him now except relieve some of his pain. Yukimi is obviously concerned, and Kumohira wonders why he won't come by and see Yoite himself. He wearily says it's impossible, as he's still a Kairoushuu. Before they leave, however, he calls Miharu over to the car and hands him a folded slip of paper, saying that with this he entrusts Yoite to Miharu--he'll never be involved with them again. As they drive off, Miharu reads the slip: it's Yoite's favorite hot lemonade recipe. [...awwww....]. Thobari notices that an address is jotted at the bottom of the page.
===In the car, Kazuho asks if Yukimi plans to see Yoite, but he says he's fine leaving things like this. She suggests hopefully that it may be possible to save him, but the darkness of her brother's expression silences her. [Yukimi's voice and manner are so exhausted here; I think it's as much the grief he feels as the gravity of his wounds.] Determined to be cheerful, she suggests they get something to eat, and to that he says he's starving. =).

We see Miharu and Yoite getting off a bus; they're tracking down the address that was added to the lemonade recipe. It turns out to be Yoite's parents' address, a small house with a beautiful, lovingly tended garden. A man steps out and asks if they need something; Yoite's eyes widen at sight of his father, but aloud he only compliments the garden. The man thanks them and heads back inside; as he reaches the door it suddenly seems to dawn on him who he was speaking to, and he turns back hastily to find them gone.

Sitting at the bus stop, Yoite looks peaceful and content. He thanks Miharu for coming here with him, and recalls some memories of the house (and quite touchingly says he remembers his father as being taller than that-- he's easily head-and-shoulders above his dad now). He expresses his gratitude at having met Miharu, before suddenly tiring and leaning into his shoulder. Miharu takes his arm and supports him as they continue to talk, and Yoite says he feels complete now.

We see a series of moments: Shijima showing up outside the window at Banten School to grin at Kouichi during class; Raimei praying at Raikou's grave in the flower field; Gau enjoying his kendo training; Kazuho serving customers at her husband's restaurant; Yukimi snapping photographs; Juuji at work in the pharmacy; pinwheels spinning over the Fuuma village, and Saraba glaring as Kotarou drools over a new addition to his hentai collection; Hana studying a fossil (there's a new photo in her office showing her and Thobari with their "adopted children", Gau, Miharu and Yoite); Miharu happily working in the family restaurant, and Thobari taking Yoite, now in a wheelchair, to see the scenic view over the city where he and Miharu have talked so many times.

And finally: we see Yoite and Miharu sitting on the back porch at Hana's house, Yoite at his knitting and Miharu reading. They agree that the others will be arriving soon for their usual gathering, and Miharu asks what Yoite would like him to make. Yoite says lemonade, of course. =) --He looks touchingly frail and worn. Miharu goes into the kitchen, and Yoite leans back into his rocking chair; his eyes slide shut, and don't open. His hands shimmer and dissolve, a sparkling dust rising into the air. His ball of yarn bounces down the steps and rolls away. ==Gau, Kouichi and Raimei, heading toward the house, stop as they see the shimmering swirl rising into the sky. Miharu, coming out with the tray, sees it too, and runs to the chair calling Yoite's name...but nothing is left there but his empty clothes. Miharu looks up at the bright dust, touches the clothes gently, then picks up the unfinished scarf--Yoite's needle still in the last stitch--and hugs it to his face, closing his eyes.

I'll never forget you, Yoite, he says.
