Episode 25--Two People (Futari)

[In the absence of a subtitled episode, this version is 50% from the visuals, 49% from outside reviews and 1% from my smidgen of language lessons (thx JPod 101 =). Best we can do....as before, warmest thanks to Divine's Random Curiosity blog and Subculture blog.]

Yoite backs off in wild-eyed horror from Hattori's corpse, desperately screaming "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Unable to believe what he's done, and losing control of his Kira power, he hurls Hattori's body into the air where the wild forces rip it apart. Miharu, still wrapped in the swirling column of hijutsu force, stands by expressionlessly, eyes blank, totally withdrawn into his head.

Saraba, Katou and Yae come running up, and stare horrified at the chaotic scene. Raimei tearfully tells them of her brother's fate. Panic-stricken Yoite once again sees the spectres from his past who tell him he should have died; he cries out that he can't make himself disappear, but... and points a shaking forefinger at his own head. Raimei, still in tears, calls to Miharu to help Yoite, but he can't hear her.

Yae uses the izunashingan to enter Miharu's mindspace and finds him sitting huddled into himself, face pressed into his knees, saying that everyone has lied to him and he only wants to be left alone. The Fairy appears and agrees with him, but tells him that he should use her power. He says that the shinrabanshou doesn't really belong to him, but she surprises him by saying that in fact she exists only for his sake. She holds out her hand, and he rises to his feet and takes it in his. There's a blaze of lightning.

Yoite is frozen in shock, still leveling his trigger finger at himself but unable to use it. Ichiki angrily sics Hyou and Shigure on him, telling them to finish him off, but Yukimi throws himself between Yoite and the Tattegami, saying there's no reason to do this now that their leader is dead. Ichiki can't bear to hear this; drawing a tanto knife that was hidden in her clothes, she shrieks Yoite's name and rushes forward. Yukimi easily intercepts her and grabs the knife [she is blind, after all], but he's attacked by both Tattegami and takes a deep stab wound (just under the left lower rib I'd say). Holding the three at bay with his gun he makes his way to Yoite, shoves him off balance to break his concentration, and haltingly tells him that he mustn't die--then pitches face-first to the ground in a pool of blood. The blind glaze of panic finally clears from Yoite's eyes; Yukimi, he says, gazing down in concern and grief.

Back in the mindspace, the Fairy and Miharu are still standing hand-in-hand as if pledging their troth. Shinrabanshou, he says almost tenderly; Watashi (I)...she says, and a tremendous column of fire roars into the sky, as the lines of text that have been shivering in place on Miharu's skin rush into motion again. The landscape begins to shudder and crumble with waves of earthquakes. Ichiki wonders what she's to do without Hattori just before the hillside collapses under her feet. Raimei and Kouichi; Katou, Yae and Saraba; Shijima; Fuuma Kotarou (actually giggling with crazy glee) and Thobari all look on as a tremendous glowing apparition of Miharu rises out of the valley. The Fairy, almost gloating over her defeat of Miharu's stubborn will, steps forward to embrace him, but a force field pushes her back; she looks up in annoyance as a woman's shape walks toward them. It's you, Asahi, she says. --Mother, gasps Miharu. Asahi once more asks Miharu to forget everything, saying she's sorry that she placed so much responsibility on him and burdened him with the weight of Nabari, and wants him to return to his ordinary life. The angry Shinrabanshou shouts at her, but she smiles at her son, and as images of them together in his childhood come back to him for the first time, the blankness leaves his eyes. He consciously suppresses the hijutsu; the giant form of himself comes apart and vanishes, the column of light flares in shock waves and fades out, and light breaks through the swirling clouds. The lines of black text retreat from his bruised skin, and he falls unconscious in the middle of the blast crater. Raimei and Kouichi run to him, calling his name.

Miharu wakes in a hospital and tries to leave immediately, but is stopped by Thobari, who tells him that he needs rest, and that Yoite has disappeared but Kouichi is looking for him. Miharu shoves him away, bitterly saying that he has no right to tell Miharu anything after hiding so much from him for so long. Raimei comes running up, expressing her surprise at seeing Miharu on his feet as he's been in bed for five days. As Kumohira-sensei sits in the hall, Fuuma-dono comes in and in great amusement shows him the newspaper story the Fuuma concocted to explain last night's chaos. (An earthquake, but it fortunately resulted in no casualties). He also needles him about how it must hurt him to have been forced to reveal the engetsu-rin after holding it in secret so long.

Gau (finally conscious again) and Raimei visit Miharu in his room with a lunch tray. He tells them they don't have to be nice to him, as it's his fault Raikou died. Raimei slaps him across the face, indignantly saying that there were a number of things involved in his death and that she's never even thought of blaming Miharu--neither she nor Raikou would want him to take the blame himself. (Miharu looks so exhausted and desolate; he blames himself no matter what she says.) -- She runs out; Gau says that if she hadn't hit Miharu he'd have done it himself, and also leaves. Miharu sits still, drained.. Kotarou, still bugging Thobari, asks what he plans to do now that this game is over--I may not even play in the next one, he adds. Thobari gets tired of his games and flat-out asks what he's expecting, but he of course skirts the question, saying he'll just be an observer for awhile. Kumohira leaves without saying where he's headed.

He walks into Yukimi's room in the same hospital (though it can't be the Kairoushuu hospital, as we see Juuji working there) --he's heavily wrapped in bandages but sitting up and working on his laptop, piles of books and papers on the bed and bedside table. =) (I think Yukimi tries to tell him that Yoite is dead, or probably dead, and that Thobari disagrees.) He says there are still things for Yukimi to do despite the damage he's sustained, and, actually bowing to him, humbly begs him to find Yoite. He adds that there can't be many places he would be at this point. Yukimi angrily orders him out of the room. Kumohira walks out of the hospital, looking back up at Yukimi's window; Yukimi shoves a pile of books off the bed and buries his face in his arms.

We see Kouichi studying bound volumes of newspapers in his research on Yoite (the clipping he sees is presumably about his failed suicide); then we see him come walking up as Thobari is sitting on a wall by the sea. He tells sensei that he's been able to find Yoite's real name, but nothing else. Just then, however, a car pulls up behind them. It's Kazuho and Yukimi (they've actually got an intravenous drip set up in the car for him! clever!). Yukimi gives the Banten pair a volume of notes about Yoite and his condition that Hattori gave to him, back when the boy was entrusted to his care. He wearily says he's leaving Yoite in their hands and counting on them to help him.

Back at the hospital--apparently, some time later--Juuji takes Miharu's blood pressure (it's 123 over 73) and says he's nearly recovered. A visitor arrives: Thobari-sensei. Miharu's not thrilled to see him, but they walk outside to talk. Miharu bluntly asks "well, what is it?" ("Maa, nani?") and Thobari tells him that they think they've tracked down Yoite's whereabouts. Having his attention, he then goes on to explain that all this time he's felt it his duty to protect Miharu from all those who would try to use him and his power, as he'd promised Asahi and grandfather he would; however, he's now prepared to let Miharu handle matters himself if he feels ready to. Miharu asks if that's why he used the engetsu-rin, and he says it is. Does this mean I can use the hijutsu, the boy asks; Kumohira says he supposes it can't be helped, though he still doesn't want Miharu to do so and will try to stop him if he can. Nothing's changed then, says Miharu smiling a little. Sensei grumbles, and Miharu rises to leave, then turns to say that he wants one condition from Thobari...

Raimei and Gau see Miharu leaving the hospital; he asks them to let him go alone, but Raimei says, only if he'll promise to bring Yoite back with him.== On the train, he's cornered by Fuuma Kotarou (and I'm pretty sure he calls him a rat =) Kotarou asks to sit with him, first offering to tell him how the separation jutsu claimed his mother's life (he refuses, saying there's no point in hearing that now, and even covers his ears!) Kotarou exasperatedly says she was just the same, and even joined Banten rather than Fuuma to sidestep him. =). He goes on chattily, in his way, about Asahi and the shinrabanshou, explaining that he'd tried to recruit her into the Fuuma because of his interest in the hijutsu. However, he openly admits that he still wants the hijutsu himself, just as he told Miharu when they met, and even says that in his ambitions he's much like Hattori, though not in his methods. While Hattori wanted to use the hijutsu to make the world uniform, Fuuma-dono is more interested in just seeing how the world would change if it were in use. As he says he'll do anything to see this happen, Miharu guesses he's being given free rein.

The Fuuma master vanishes when Miharu disembarks from the train, but he wisely suspects he's still nearby. Checking the map Kumohira gave him. Miharu makes his way through the quiet, pretty seaside town. He's looking for a secluded church, a place they've learned that Yoite thought of as a sanctuary when he was taken from his home--when, sensei said, he was still called "Sora" [And Miharu surely recalls where he's heard that name before.]--. Finding it, he walks down the aisle, and there sees a single person, dressed in black, sitting at the end of a pew...

Miharu's eyes light up, but the silent figure gives no sign he's heard anyone enter.
