Episode 20--Toward Togakushi (Togakushi he,"To Togakushi")

When Miharu and Yoite arrive at the FogBlue office, they find that Yae is not there and that the staff has been told not to reveal her whereabouts. However, Miharu does the big-green-kitten-eyes thing ("But we came so far to talk to her!") and is able to persuade them to provide her home address. ==Meanwhile, Raimei and Raikou have a phone conversation. Raimei says she's glad to hear that Gau has recovered, but she doesn't know where Thobari or Miharu are--and shouldn't Raikou know more about that than she does, since Miharu's now an Ash Wolf? She and Kouichi confer, and decide that Raikou was fishing for information, and that Miharu must have rebelled and fled the Kairoushuu village. Realizing this puts both him and Yoite in grave danger of being hunted down and executed as traitors, they resolve to find him before the Kairoushuu do.

We see the missing Thobari, walking in the same forest that we've seen in his flashbacks of ten years ago. We see a succession of his memories: being welcomed to Japan, told to "do it" by his dying grandfather, seeing the shinrabanshou take over Miharu's body, and told to keep all this secret from Miharu.
(Thanks to translators named below <3<3, here are some quotes from his flashback:
- Thobari, you have to do this!
- Who are you, big bro?
- Brother, who is that?
- Miharu is now the owner of shinrabanshou. You'll be the only one to remember this. And...take care about Miharu.)

M&Y arrive at Yae's home, far out in the countryside. She's very surprised to see them but welcomes them in and serves tea. Miharu pays his respects at the memorial to her daughter Elisa. She expresses her curiosity at seeing the shinrabanshou and Kira users working together, and asks what's going on in Nabari; Miharu replies that he's not sure, and tells her he's here not as a representative of either Banten Village or the Kairoushuu, but on his own. The kids then get to the point, asking her to use the izunashingan for them. She's uncomfortable with this, saying she's given up using it as she swore to do, but Miharu makes an intense and emotional appeal, saying that there's no other way for him to save Yoite.

(Again, thanks to translators:
"Oda-san, I want to use the shinrabanshou for Yoite's sake! I don't care about becoming the Ruler of Nabari. I don't care about what happens to me. I just want to fulfill Yoite's wish. Just this! No matter what, I want to use the shinrabanshou. Please, help me with your power!")

She's reminded of her own determination to save her daughter, thinking that Miharu's eyes look just the same as hers did then, and agrees.

Yukimi fumes that he can't reach anyone by phone. ==at the Kairoushuu HQ, Gau overhears the Tattegami talking about how "the two traitors" are in Togakushi; he confronts them and learns that--just as Kouichi and Raimei feared--they're making plans to hunt down and kill Yoite. Gau speaks with Hattori, asking if what he heard is true, and begs him to save Yoite's life, but the leader will only say that Yoite's role is over. Speaking with Raikou later, Gau angrily questions what Hattori can be thinking, when he’s relied on Yoite’s powers and the Kairoushuu’s sense of justice [Gau, loyalest of the loyal, questioning the boss? whoa!]. Raikou, however, is more concerned about why the Tattegami have been called in when it should’ve been their responsibility. Feeling indebted to Yoite for saving Gau, Raikou wants to rescue him if possible, but cautions Gau to abide by their rules for fear of coming under suspicion as a traitor's accomplice.

Miharu and Yae kneel facing each other, preparing to undergo the izunashingan. Yoite is very anxious for Miharu's safety (recall that Kazuho told them this technique could kill him if it failed), but Miharu assures him he won't die, and tells Yae to go ahead.

We see the FogBlue office, where everyone has gathered to read an urgent e-mail supposedly from Yae. What could be so important, they wonder--but the message was a ruse sent by the Tattegami, who, once the whole staff is assembled, detonate a bomb that destroys the entire top story of their building. [And they were all so nice.. =( ]

Inside Miharu's mind, Yae questions his inner self, trying to help him understand what's blocking his ability to use the shinrabanshou. She suspects he's afraid to do it, because though he wants to keep his vow to Yoite, he doesn't truly want to see him disappear. --The shinrabanshou herself appears, addressing Yae as "Izunashingan" and taunting her as a coward who's trying to run away from Nabari. Miharu asks her why she won't lend him her powers as she said she would, but she says that saving Yoite is a boring project, and coaxes him to think of his own desires. She nearly pulls him under her sway, but Yae comes to his defense, telling the Fairy that Miharu is very serious about this goal. Is that really so, she wonders...

(And once again:
Shinrabanshou: Or do you want to do it just because Yoite asked you? What do you want for yourself? Tell me your own wish!
Miharu: My... own wish?
Oda: Wake up, Miharu! (--to Shinrabanshou:) Don't dodge the question, just answer clearly! This boy is serious! He's changed a lot since I last saw him! He found the meaning of his life. And he needs your power!
Shinrabanshou: Really? I wonder...Miharu… it might hurt but I won't grant any one's wish but your own.
Miharu: But I made a promise! I want to fulfill it!
Shinrabanshou: Is that true?)

The Fairy strikes out in a fierce attack at both of them, saying she won't help him if all he wants to do is fulfill others' wishes. With Yae struggling and in great pain, Miharu is able to marshal some of his own power and free her from the shinrabanshou's grip. She compliments him on showing this initiative, but says he's still not ready, and that he must be more clear about what he wants.

(We see a helicopter crossing the countryside at top speed, toward Yae's home. Presumably the Tattegami moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2.)

Finally released from the psychic battleground, Miharu and Yae regain consciousness in her living room. Miharu begs Yoite's forgiveness (while cradled in his lap =); he and Yae bitterly agree that the experiment was a failure, since the hijutsu fairy has made it clear she'll only help Miharu on her own terms. [--yeah, whatever happened to 'just wish for it and the shinrabanshou will heed your call'? ]

As they lie there exhausted and barely able to move, the Tattegami charge in. Yoite, the only one of the three who's in any shape to fight, tries to hold them off, but in his weakened condition and outnumbered four to one, he's soon brought down. Their leader, Shiranui, shows Yae a TV news broadcast about the destruction of FogBlue's office, saying that the death of her comrades is her punishment for aiding two Kairoushuu renegades [--isn't that working in an awfully short time frame, even for ninjas?] Yae reacts in shock and rage, and lashes out at the assassins, struggling furiously, but is knocked unconscious. Shiranui tells his team to kill Yae and Yoite and take the shinrabanshou captive, but Miharu cries out that if Yoite dies he'll die as well. [I'm not sure whether he's telling them that he'll kill himself, or that he's a victim of Yoite's Kira power. Whichever, it works.] The Tattegami contact Ichiki, who tells them to bring all three back alive, and reports to Hattori that the Togakushi have been dealt with. She also passes on to Hattori the interesting fact (apparently the Tattegami overheard some of the session) that Miharu addresses the shinrabanshou by a name--Yosei-san (basically "Miss Fairy")-- as if it were a separate person.
