Samurai Champloo--the Original Soundtracks
--and--
Silent_Edge's Soundtrack Guide to the Episodes

((c) 2005, Silent_Edge and Paula O'Keefe, based on characters owned by Manglobe/Shimoigusa Champloos)==Updated AUGUST 2013==

The cool instrumental beats used as pervasive background music for Samurai Champloo have been collected on four original soundtrack (OST) CDs released in Japan, and one compilation CD for American release. They are excellent stuff and well worth owning, even if you've never been a fan of hip-hop before.

Quick Cheat Sheet:--In addition to the thoroughly addictive beats, there are several "songs with lyrics" scattered throughout Champloo, and they have been among the most popular tracks. Should you be looking for one of those, they are:
(1) Show opening theme: "Battlecry", on Departure and Katana. ==(2) Usual show closing theme: "Shiki No Uta" (Song of Four Seasons), on Departure and Katana. ==(3) Show closing theme from #12: "Who's Theme" on Impression. ==(4) Mugen's "drowning dream" sequence from #14: "Obokuri-Ee Umi" (Obtain Bearing) by Ikue Asazaki, from her album "Utabautayun"--not on an OST. ==(5) Ainu song from #17: "Pekambe Uku" ("Wheat Harvesting Song") sung by Umeko Ando, from her album "Ihunke"--not on an OST. (See more complete notes at Episode 17 below.) ==(6) Show closing theme from #17: "YOU" (featuring Kazumi), on Masta. ==(7) Tagging Battle song from #18: "hiji zuru STYLE" (featuring Suiken & S-word), on Impression. ==(8) Sara's song in #20: "Kuzunoha no Kowakare" (Kuzunoha's Child Separation), traditional Japanese song--not on an OST. ==(9) Show ending theme from #23: "FLY [Small Circle of Friends]" on Playlist. ==(10) Show and series ending theme from #26: "San Francisco" by Midicronica, from the album "#501".

(Both English and Japanese lyrics for several of the above songs can be found at Champloo Song Lyrics.)

Special note on Episode 11: THE most asked question in Champloo fandom worldwide (I think it even tops "exactly what did Jin and Fuu say in that talk by the riverside") is: "what is the piece of music played while Jin and Shino make their escape to the river"? I have gotten many, many emails on this topic in the years that Amalgam has existed, BUT:
We have finally answered this question!! Our friend and Champloo music expert Silent_Edge on 13 Nov. 07 wrote: "I'm proud to say that on the HydeOut Productions: 2nd Collection, track 6 entitled 'Counting Stars', is officially the mystery track on episode 11. My work is done."
---hydeout productions is a project headed by Nujabes, co-creator of the Champloo OST album Departure.
Buy it thru Amazon Japan: hydeout productions 2nd Collection

--A million thanks to Silent for answering this persistent Champloo FAQ!)

===However, we still do not have any leads on the other mystery track in ep. 11, informally known as "Jin in the Rain". Maybe someday.

---Soundtrack Guide to the Episodes---

My dedicated cohort Silent_Edge, from Swords & Sunflowers forum, undertook the massive task of compiling a soundtrack listing for each episode of Champloo, noting where each track played can be found on CD. Silent was so kind as to let me use that listing here, and I am most grateful;

7. "Victim's Relief from Hot Metal" - ??? - ??? OST

August 2013 update: Eugene Peterson writes: " '19. Unholy Union--2. "Hut Searching" - ??? - ??? OST' ...sounds like a small cut from the same track used in ep. 15. Bogus Booty, 7. "Victim's Relief from Hot Metal", the one that Andrew Strother tracked down to perhaps a version of Kismet - Amon Duul II (Pilooski Edit)".
Andrew Strother writes: "[in]regards to an unknown track in episode 15 (bogus booty) track #7. "Victim's Relief from Hot Metal" - ??? - ??? OST . . . I'm assuming the track you're referring to starts right after Mugen & Yatsuha jump down the elevator shaft, and the scene is of the counterfeiters working. It's a dark track and it starts in the episode around 15:27 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7vu_Q0fbgM). I fell in love with this song when I heard it in a earlier episode and have been dedicated to figure out what it is. Through much research, the closest I could find (for it's not exactly the track, but an edit probably created by Nujabes or Tsutchie) is the track called: Kismet - Amon Duul II (Pilooski Edit) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHcYJhb-e30). If you start the song at 3:24, you'll hear the part that was used for the scene in Bogus Booty. Well, it's the song, but it's slightly edited for Samurai Champloo. The sounds from the counterfeiters hammering the gold pieces, as well as a different cymbal (hi-hat) were used along side the Pilooski edit. If for some reason you come across the EXACT track that was used for Samurai Champloo, I would GREATLY appreciate it. I'm a Dj, and I find inspiration any and everywhere. It's awe inspiring that the dark ominous feel of this track combined with the smooth Middle eastern-esk guitar part really motivates those that don't normally dance to bob their heads uncontrollably." ==Cezary Jurkiewicz confirms it: "I want to say that 100% there was a German band called Amon Duul II - track 'Kismet' which was sampled in the missing track. I tried to find who sampled and i think most possibly it is Cypress Hill in Prelude to come up."

2. "Sara's Performance" - Kuzunoha no Kowakare ('Kuzunoha's Child Separation' or 'Kuzunoha's Farewell to Her Child') - (traditional folk song?)== --The recording used in the series is sung by Tsukioka Yukiko, who studied the recordings of the "last of the Goze'", Haru Kobayashi (who was 105 years old when she died, in 2005) and Shizu Sugimoto, and even walked a pilgrimage of all 88 temples of Shikoku Island to understand the harsh life of these traveling performers. I have not been able to find a source for her recordings.
SC fan Rodrigo located her website, there are many links - possibly there are downloads on it. I also found a link there to the Champloo website referring to these episodes!

(Several people have supplied this info. Gabrielle Logan gives details: "...it appears either on Olive Oil's own album "Elninos Restarting Lazy Work" or a "various artists" set put out by the Libyus label, called "Listening is Believing". One would be more likely to find the latter, since Olive Oil's was limited release and harder to find than a needle in a haystack.")
